The Last Trick by Jan Svankmajer, 1964

BFI Southbank bring you a selection of Jan Švankmajer’s astonishing surrealist shorts later this month, introduced by Animate commissioned artist Let Me Feel Your Finger First.

The works being screened employ stop-frame animation, puppets, claymation and live-action; foregrounding Švankmajer’s irreverent sensibility, a fixation on voracious appetites, oral consumption and a playful jumbling of the animate with the inanimate. From a bemused guinea pig teased by hand puppets in Punch and Judy, and Stalin’s statue laying on the autopsy slab in the satirical Death of Stalinism in Bohemia, to the frenetic animated invention of Dimensions of Dialogue, this is a great chance to see the Czech artist’s work on the big screen.

The screening is on 29 May at 8.40pm. Further details can be found here.
